Small Steps, Real Independence

From needing full support at mealtimes to managing most of it independently within a school term.

Background

An 8 year old whose family wanted to build daily living independence, starting with mealtimes, which had become a source of daily stress for everyone involved.

Goals

Independent use of cutlery, sitting through a full meal, and reduced reliance on an adult for every step.

Approach

Breaking mealtime into small physical steps, practised individually before being combined, with extra time built in rather than rushing transitions.

Outcome

By the end of the term, the child was managing most of a meal independently, with support only needed for the last, most difficult steps.

Reflection

Progress rarely looks dramatic in the moment. It looks like one small adjustment repeated consistently until it holds.
